Valborg

Valborg est une des principales fêtes traditionnelles suédoises, avec celles de Noël et du solstice d'été. C'est en réalité un mixte de deux célébrations différentes, ayant toutes deux lieu le 30 avril : celle des vikings honorant le printemps et celle d'une sainte catholique, Walpurga, qui a donné son nom à la fête. Si vous voulez connaître plus en détails l'origine de cette fête je vous renvoie à wikipédia (que ferait-ton sans ce cher wiki?).

Valborg is one of the most important traditional celebrations in Sweden, alongside Christmas and Midsummer holiday. It's a combination of two different celebrations that both took place on the 30th of April. On one hand it was the day when the Vikings honoured the Spring and on the other hand it was the holy day of Saint Walpurga (who gave her name to the current event).If you want to learn more about it I advice you to read the following article on wikipedia.

Concrètement tout le monde faisait la fête le soir du 30 avril ! d'autant plus que le 1er mai est aussi chômé par ici. La ville d'Umeå avait organisé nombre d'animations sur le campus, hormis le traditionnel feu de Valborg, il y avait aussi des stands, balades en poney, jeux, concerts... Tout ceci semble avoir rassemblé tous les habitants de la ville sur le campus à en juger la foule ! Voici un petit aperçu de l'événement en images.

In facts, everybody was partying on the last night of April ! Besides the 1st of May is also a holiday here. The municipality of Umeå had organised many activities across the campus, it includes the traditonnal Valborg fire, a market, pony riding, games, concerts... The event seemed to have gathered all the inhabitants of the town ! Here is an overview of the event, through images.

L'élément principal de la célébration, le grand feu, dont j'ai malheureusement loupé l'allumage car j'étais pendant ce temps-là occupé à chanter "Välkommen sköna Maj" (= bienvenue beau mois de mai) avec le Nationskören et le Student kör (les deux chorales de la fac), je vous évite une énième photo de chorale suédoise ;) Après les chants traditionnels, nous assistons à trois autres concerts :

The main event of the day, the big fire ! Unfortunately I missed it as I was singing "Välkommen sköna Maj" (= welcome nice month of May) at the same time with the Nationkören and the Student kör (the two university's choirs). After the traditional songs, we attended three other concerts :

Tout d'abord un groupe de métal, EMP, accompagné de danseurs pyromanes

First a metal band, EMP, surrounded by pyromaniac dancers

Ensuite, changement d'ambiance avec un duo folk, Plan a Revolution

Then, the atmosphere was different, with the folk duo, Plan a Revolution

Enfin, les stars de la soirée, The Perishers, groupe pop rappelant Coldplay.

Finally, we saw the main guests of the night, The Perishers, a pop band which sounds like Coldplay.

Une très belle journée festive, et qui plus est, le temps était au beau fixe, les températures étaient même grimpé à 19°C l'après-midi, du jamais vu ! Pour prolonger un peu la parenthèse climatique, après les jours sans lumière de cet hiver, nous nous approchons maintenant des nuits blanches ! Le soleil se couche dorénavant vers 22h et se lève dès 4h ! Encore une nouvelle expérience...

It was a really nice festive day (lovely ;) ), especially thanks to the glorious weather we had ! The temperatures even reached 19°C in the afternoon, unbelievable ! To keep on dealing with the climatic conditions I should add that after having experienced the days without light this winter we will soon have to face the nights without darkness ! The sun now sets at 10pm and raises at 4 am ! Another new experience...
